Mafalda Carvalho

Clinical Innovation Office Director

Mafalda serves as the Director of the Clinical Innovation Office at the North Lisbon University Hospital Centre (ULS Santa Maria), one of Portugal's leading medical institutions. For the past five years, she has been responsible for managing the evaluation and adoption of new medical technologies, guiding innovative clinical projects from concept to implementation.

In her role, Mafalda works at the critical intersection of technology developers, regulatory requirements, and clinical end-users. She provides an essential real-world perspective on how novel tools, including AI-driven devices, perform and integrate within a complex hospital environment. Her work ensures that new technologies are not only promising but also practical, safe, and aligned with the needs of clinicians and patients. Before her focus on innovation management, Mafalda was a cardiovascular researcher. She holds both a BSc and MSc from King's College London.
