Mariana is a PhD fellow in AI-enabled medical devices and digital health compliance, focusing on Usability Engineering in AI-enabled medical solutions. Her doctoral research focuses on developing novel usability frameworks for complex diagnostic systems, addressing issues such as clinician trust in algorithmic outputs, cognitive workload during human-AI interaction, and strategies to mitigate automation bias in clinical decision-making.
Mariana is also a member of the Joint Working Group ISO/IEC JTC1/SC42 - ISO/TC 215 WG : AI enabled health informatics, as well as an invited member of the Portuguese Technical Comission for AI standards (CT 223). Since 2025, she's an Invited Teaching Assistant at the University of Lisbon where she teaches Medical Devices-related courses to master students.
With prior experience as a medtech founder in a DTx startup, Mariana is passionate about evidence-based design and aims to establish clear principles that ensure the next generation of medical AI is not only powerful but also safe, transparent, and seamlessly integrated into the practice of medicine.
